Statement from the VP: Kenyans should remain calm and focused

Following the death of Sheikh Aboud Rogo, there have been sporadic protests, which unfortunately have been taken advantage of, by criminal elements to cause death and destruction.

By targeting churches and other places of worship, the intent of the perpetrators of such cowardly acts is to fan tension between people who ascribe to different faiths, specifically Muslims and Christians. This should not be and must not be allowed to be.

Kenya has and continues to be the best example of a nation where religious tolerance is optimal. Our constitution also makes this the case. It is therefore imperative that members of different religious groups should remain vigilant, identify and expose people whose intentions are not honourable.

I therefore appeal to Christians and Muslims to work together to ensure peace and harmony returns to Mombasa. Let us learn to forgive and restore rather than seek revenge.

Stephen Kalonzo Musyoka
Vice President and Minister for Home Affairs
London.
